Although it looks like you have found an alternative, I thought I would
add this for the archive :)

There are links to the "mini ISO" ( which I think is what you were looking
for) on

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD

The URLs themselves are certainly not easy to find, being buried in
subdirectories like
archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/edgy/main/installer-i386/images/netboot ,
for example....
