I decided to re-install from scratch, but thanks for the advice anyway.

Just for your information when i got similar problem the :
'sudo apt-get install' removed my complete KDE and ripped of the X server
too.

Just be careful while fixing them.
With Synaptic I use to get some broken packages and trying to remove those
makes most of the KDE files to be removed.

I have tried to install a .deb and have got myself in a bit of a
pickle.......  out put follows ######## root at ubuntu-desktop:/# sudo apt-get
install -f Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading
state information... Done Correcting dependencies... failed.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 cpp-4.1: Depends: gcc-4.1-base (= 4.1.1-13ubuntu5) but 4.1.1-21 is
installed
 g++-4.1: Depends: gcc-4.1-base (= 4.1.1-13ubuntu5) but 4.1.1-21 is
installed
 gcc-4.1: Depends: gcc-4.1-base (= 4.1.1-13ubuntu5) but 4.1.1-21 is
installed
 libgcc1: Depends: gcc-4.1-base (= 4.1.1-13ubuntu5) but 4.1.1-21 is
installed
 libstdc++6: Depends: gcc-4.1-base (= 4.1.1-13ubuntu5) but 4.1.1-21 is
installed
 libstdc++6-4.1-dev: Depends: gcc-4.1-base (= 4.1.1-13ubuntu5) but
