what to use instead of skype?

There is a lot of frustration expressed on the Skype Linux forums, where some 
people go on to suggest Wengophone as an alternative, though I don't expect 
this to be call compatible with Skype.

I'd like to know what effort would be needed, on the Skype development side, 
to get the latest versions of Windows Skype to run nicely under wine.  This 
would appear to be the simplest solution for all.

I started a thread recently on the Skype forum,

fallen of deaf ears.
