edgy: sound lost after install

That was the fist thing that I tried.  For some reason moving the Kmix 
sound level bar after right clicking does nothing.  I have to open up 
the Kmix window and then do some things in there to make the volume 
go up and down.

Whilst it's true that a line in to my sound card which is a local 
radio station from a JVC tuner works fine any MP3s are not played - 
no sound - and Xine and any other sounds are not played.  No sound 
from MP3 or video or Skype which is VOIP telephone from a microphone 
on the desk infront of me.

Obviously, I don't know whether my own problems are related to anyone 
else's and I might be wrong in thinking that there is a link between 
my problems and someone else's.

Ensoniq ES1370 sound card which is ancient but works with any other 
Linux software but not Kubuntu/Ubuntu Edgy Eft.
