The version of gnucash in Dapper is 1.8.12, which cannot handle utf-8
characters. Start it with "LANG=en_US.iso-8859-1 gnucash" (or if you
are not in the US, use an appropriate locale). I think Edgy has gnucash
2.0, or if you are feeling brave you can try downloading the source code
from gnucash.org.
