The modem won't have an IP address, but a router will. I think all he'll
get from the ISP will be a modem.
What would be good to get from the ISP are the DNS IP addresses, the POP
server name (or IMAP if that is what the ISP uses) and SMTP server name.
That will likely be provided with an info package. All PPPoE software
would be available in any modern linux distro. Nothing is needed from
the ISP that is specific to Linux, just don't use any software they provide.
If you are not using a router, just set up a network for DSL.
