sound lost completely - again

weird... this morning i get an update notice... I run the update.  I
also cleaned up some desktop junk, and did a reboot of the box.  No
sound anywhere... this isn't the first time it's happened, and I'm
wondering what is going on with Dapper and Edgy that every third update
turns off all sound.
