desktop effects: XGL or AIGLX? compiz or beryl?...

Hi,
I plan to install a Linux distribution on my friend's laptop. It has a nVidia 
card, and 3DEffects are supported, I already tested it with many other 
distributions, including Edgy.
But I wonder what's the future of Desktop efects on Ubuntu: Is it XGL or 
AIGLX? 
Because I want to follow the distribution's choice on that point, and dont 
want to switch in a near future, if I choose a nearly unsupported technology.
