getting back Gnome after compiz

i had the same problem. try this from the command line:
* the below command will show you what starts automatically:
ls /home/username/.config/autostart
** if beryl-manager is there delete it with the following command:
sudo rm /home/username/.config/autostart/filename
*** I had the same issue with beryl because it was crashing my box and
also loading automatically on startup.
