Missing "genksyms" in the "module-init-tools" package?

Hello, everyone!
This is my first mail to this list, I'm new to Ubuntu (currently using 6.10 Edgy Eft), and English is not my native language, so please be patient :)
Is it normal for the "genksyms" script not to be included in the "module-init-tools" package? I've noticed the absence of it when trying to compile the driver for my Intel-537EP Winmodem. That is very strange because every other place I've visited (e.g. Linux From Scratch) tells me that "genksyms" is part of "module-init-tools" for the 2.6.x kernel versions.
Installing the "modutils" package (suitable only for 2.4.x kernels) doesn't solve the problem as the "-a" parameter, which is required by the installation process, is available only in newer versions of the script.
Please, could you help me?
Thanks a lot!
