useful utilities

I've been known to use it from the Live CD.

It's worked for me in the past, but sometimes you need to install extra
filesystem tools for it to support more types. 

What other options are you contemplating? I believe VMWare can just use
files in the filesystem, so there's no need to physical make partitions
on the drive.
