help with new monitor

Try running sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg in a terminal. When you
get to the monitor resolution check 1280x1024 (most LCDs support this as
standard res.) Your monitor doc. should show its "native resolution."

As always, your mileage may vary.
