help with new monitor

HI All,

Could anyone tell me how I can install my new monitor so that I can get 
higher resolutions? Let me re-phrase that, I installed a new monitor 
(LCD) which has higher resolutions than 1024 x 768.

But when I go to the screen resolutions under system, preferences it 
will only let me go as high as 1024 x 768. Could someone point me in the 
right direction. I did try the help section and typed changing screen 
resolutions, but it only directs me to the screen resolution is prefs.
