It looks like:

sudo apt-get install linux-image-lowlatency

should change the kernel.  Type that into the terminal and press enter.
 Then, you'll need to restart and choose that kernel.  You can remove
the old kernel from the menu by editing the file:

/boot/grub/menu.lst
