help with restoring a password

I'm not sure what you mean.  In the command-line type:

sudo passwd trevor

Obviously, replace trevor with whatever your username is.  Then, you
should be able to change your password.

If that doesn't work, tell me what you mean by "I can get the
root/password ok".
