Make sure your /etc/apt/sources.list file is OK, then try this

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

The second command will go through and try to fix all dependencies.

In order for a package to be broken in the way you have described,
generally it's because there are one or more mis-matched packages
already installed. This can happen if you changed your sources (in an
upgrade) or if you have manually installed packages from a different
repository.

If this is a relatively new installation, it might be easier to start
the installation over. There could have been a glitch in the
installation or in the security update process.
