Are you brand new to Linux?  

If No - 
Tell us about your hardware (lspci, lsusb, ifconfig, iwconfig,last)
Tell us about which version of Ubuntu you're trying to install.
Did you try running a live CD version before the install?
Is this a dual-boot?
Is it a laptop or desktop?

If yes, tell us about the computer you're trying to install Ubuntu on.
(Laptop/Desktop, windows is installed and I want to add Linux/windows is
installed and I want to replace it with Linux, etc)... Anything that
would give the list community some idea of what you're trying to
accomplish.

Beyond the above, if you're getting the dialog I think you're getting,
it's probably a video problem.
