I've found the native kde desktop search thingy is clunky and slow.
I had the pleasure of trying the app searchmonkey on a PCLOS system,
and it was quick and effective.
http://searchmonkey.sourceforge.net/index.php/Main_Page
and
http://www.getdeb.net/app.php?name=searchmonkey
I don't know if it is available to us in our repos.
The get deb page says it doesn't have a version for me, but, I'm using
dapper.
Perhaps there are packages for newer ubuntus.
If it is, I would recommend it.
