Its not waiting for a dns query to timeout (speculation ...).

Probably none other than it might workaround a nuisance issue.
If you haven't, try also putting your hostname in /etc/hosts, being
careful not to mangle the localhost settings. Just having all your DNS
bases covered properly should suffice.
Another workaround ... there is a muttrc option to background the mail
sending process, so there will still be a delay, but you won't notice
it.
