Optimum set up suggestions: Hardware

Recently, I dumped WinXP and installed Ubuntu on an HP
Slimline desktop. This was never a robust system, but
it was adequate. I expected more of a performance
boost from Linux than I got. My question is, what
would be the best way to get better performance out of
this system? Is there an ideal combination of
processor speed and RAM that seems to meet most needs?
