It may have something to do with the conversion to the MPEG-2 DVD
format. Depending on the codec used in the AVI file, you may have to use
a much higher bitrate with the MPEG-2 encoding, especially considering
it'll be transcoded, to get the same quality on the DVD. This may be why
it takes so much more space when converted to DVD format.
