Question about laptop mic

Hello Everyone,

I have Ubuntu installed on my laptop and everything 'just worked'.
Well, almost everything. The one holdout has be the audio inputs.
Whether I use the built in mic or connect an external mic to the
laptop, it simply refuses to take any sound input at all. I've played
around in the mixer and, regardless of what I do, I simply cannot
record incoming sound.

Any ideas?
