Could you try it in recovery mode? When the system starts booting, hit escape to get into the Grub menu. You should be able to select recovery mode there.

I got some reprieve by rebuilding network/interfaces and re-installing nm. At least the web is back up, but still no mail.

	Try opening a terminal (Applications>Accessories>Terminal) and running
	the command < sudo dpkg --configure -a >
