I configured gnome to restore my previous session at startup. At did 
that as a substitute for sleep/hibernate, because it does not work on my 
laptop. Maybe that is the problem?

However, the long waiting time seems to be before loading applications 
(but I don't know how to check that). It takes a long time before 
anything is shown on the screen. But once the panel and the desktop 
wallpaper appear, I see my applications appear pretty quickly in the 
workspaces.
