Unlike the xdigger in the repos
(http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/games/xdigger) which is a poor
knockoff (IMO) of the original Windmill Software Digger for DOS, I've
found a Debian install for the remastered 'Digger':
http://www.digger.org/index.html
http://www.digger.org/download.html
http://www.digger.org/digger_0.0.20020314-1_i386.deb
The package installs just fine & I can play Digger on linux now just in
time for the holidays [1]. However I cannot seem to get the sound
working properly. The man page states:
<quote>
/A:1,port,irq, dma,rate,length
Use SoundBlaster sound, e.g. /A:1,220,7,1,20000,128.
Note: In this version the options (1,port,irq, dma, rate, length)
shouldn’t be necessary. Simply use /A
</quote>
If I start digger with:
digger - no sound at all
digger /A - I get buzzing from the speakers with a near attempt at the
original movement sounds but no background sound
digger /A:2 I get acceptable movement sounds but no background sounds
I'd like to figure out how to get the original movement & background
sounds working. For anyone that has ever played this game would know why
:-) But I'm not sure what I'd need to add to the 1,port,irq,
dma, rate, length bits to get it to work properly. My lshw for my sound is:
*-multimedia
description: Multimedia audio controller
product: 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller
vendor: Intel Corporation
physical id: 1f.5
bus info: pci at 0000:00:1f.5
version: 02
width: 32 bits
clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm bus_master cap_list
configuration: driver=Intel ICH latency=0 module=snd_intel8x0
Anyone have an idea where I'd look to get the port, irq, dma, rate, length
data to feed the program so that the sounds work properly?
[1] I originally purchased the DOS version of Digger at Dick Smith
Electronics (Aussies will know what this store is) while living in
Australia during the 1980's. Over the years it has become customary in
our household to set up at least 2 & sometimes 4 systems with Digger
running for the kids & adults to play after Christmas dinner. (Xbox be
gone!). Adults that have had a little too much eggnog and fail to make
it to level 2 have their car keys taken away... Anyway, I'd like to get
Digger running with sound on Ubuntu before the holidays so that I don't
have to resort to running Windows versions. So any help would be
appreciated :-)
