Here's what I do with my machines.  I use SFTP/WinSCP to transfer files
between computers or Samba sometimes.  And I use NX to control my
servers.  It doesn't control the console, so you can have 2 people
logged in at the same time and also still have access to the console via
VNC if necessary.
