Recording Sound

I need to record sound. I have a cable into either mic our line-in from 
my testing device, a tape recorder. I use a double ended male connection 
and plug the other end into the ear phones outlet on the tape recorder. 
When I press play on the tape I cant the any of the audio applications 
(Sound Recorder or Audacity) to record.

The default recording device in Audacity is ALSA: Intel 82801DB-ICH4 
(hw:0,0). Nothing happens. I tried MIC ADC(hw:0,1), MIC2(hw:0,2), and 
ADC2(hw:0,3) with no luck.

On Sound Recorder there are no options to set.
