I just helped somebody on the #ubuntu channel with this. We added a
startup script to /etc/init.d and then a startup link in /etc/rc2.d,
numbered so that it ran after KDM/GDM. We had to renumber a couple of
links down to make space.
Worked fine - boot the box and log in with VNC, no need to log in
locally. One trick: The script used su to run vncserver as the desired
user. Because the script ran as root, no password was necessary.
