You might consider installing ubuntu-desktop package anyway. On the
plus side, you will have a standard Ubuntu desktop installation, with
all the defaults and updates that entails. On the minus side, it will
pull in a number of packages you may not care about.
Actually, if you have a spare box sitting around (or the ability to
boot from a Live CD) you might give a standard Ubuntu installation a
try to see what might be different on a "plain" Gnome installation.
