The usual recommendation in Ubuntu would actually be:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
( for GNOME)
or
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
( for KDE)
or
sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
( for xfce4)
