second thought... install partimage to do it visually :-)

It does not store unused space of the  source disk and thus gives smaller
imagefiles,
also.. I think it supports restoring to a different size partition, which
may really handy if the new disk you are putting in has a different size.

Also, you'll may need the MBR, that's the first 446 bytes of the boot device
(not first partition of the first device)  unless you do a fresh install...


$ sudo dd if=/dev/hda of=MBR.img bs=446 count=1

(partimage should fix that as well)
