build-essential, linux-headers (check your uname for the exact version)

these two are good starts.  Also, there are a couple of good how-to's in Ubuntu forums that
give fairly exhaustive lists, but these two should give you the basics.

found out that it does not install a build environment by default.

What do I need to apt-get install to have a useful build environment?
