A guest Ubuntu can also become a host system if installed in a
harddisk partition.

You can install Ubuntu from an iso image file to a real partition
with VMware. Basically you define a vmware vmdk for the real hardisk, 
install Ubuntu in a (real) partition under VMware and then reboot
the real machine from the Ubuntu partition. I have just installed
(remotely!) a server with this method and it works fine.

You could probably also use qemu instead of vmware but I haven't
tried it for this purpose.
