setting up beryl

ok so i open the beryl-manager to change a setting (and it doesnt matter 
what setting, it always does this) and it crashes telling me that

"Window manager warning: Lost connection to the display ':0.0';
most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed
the window manager."


i am 100% sure that my card is compatible because i run games on this 
card that require aiglx and they work perfectly.

i am using an ATI radeon Xpress200. it handles any sort of gl oriented 
program just fine except beryl

it also tells me that there is no composit extension. yet i have 
libxcomposite1 downloaded and installed
