Emacs - display of characters

Hi

I am converting the latex files from my colleague from windows to linux.
I work with Emacs and I am having problems with accented letters such as
ë. In the file I open I have instead the character displayed as \353.

So there is an encoding problem. As a solution I could try to make an
emacs macro but I do not know how to input the \353 (since it is only A
char) so that I could replace it by ë. Perhaps someone can suggest a
more elegant solution?
