+1

A long discussion was running here about automatix and all, and as some
friends suggested that it is not much of a problem if you first
deinstall all the things that automatix installed and then if you
deinstall automatix.

I never used it before, rather emboldened by these discussions I
installed automatix for feisty 7.04 as a trial and installed a few
codecs from it. Then, to see what happens, I first deinstalled
everything that automatix installed, and then 'apt-get' removed it.

And this is the thing I want to report. My whole OS entirely went into
jeopardy, everything running berserk. I needed quite a lot of time to
revive the whole system back to square one. And in a way that was
possible because I was connected in SSH to my desktop. As an example,
even packages like gedit, libgnomevfs, nautilus and evolution got
removed. Really, for some time, the system got insane.

For me, at least, as it stands now, it is really prudent to give heed to
all those developers who are providing us this system and in their good
sense suggesting us not to mix up these things.

The only good thing that has happened to me through automatix is a very
good sources-list in my /etc/apt with all the gpg keys in their place.
