I had sort of the same problems, but only occasionally. MP3-files played fine
one day, but not the other and so forth. Based on the error messages I got, I
figured that the problem were within the gstreamer framework. As a long shot, I
changed the totem backend from gstreamer to xine, and voilá, everything worked!
Errr, almost at least. Still need RealPlayer for playing .rm files.

While into the topic, gxine works like a breeeze as well. And I do really
preciate having *one* media backend, not everything between A to Z.
