iptables is a command used to manipulate how the linux kernel 
manipulates/forwards/masquerades network traffic, and is the backbone of 
  any Linux firewall.

To get started with a basic firewall quickly, I suggest installing the 
firestarter package, which should be able to set up most firewall 
requirements from an easy to use interface.
