question - how to change default movie player

In System, Preferences, Removable Drives and Media, Multimedia

Totem should work if you have added all the repositories  in  Synaptic
Package Manager. (multiverse, universe )

Then make sure you have totem-xine vorbis-tools sox faad lame imagemagick
ffmepg mjpegtools installed.

Then use the Synaptic Package Manager to find all entries for
gstreamer0.8that you need or want usually.
(plugins-multiverse, ffmpeg, mad, plugins, lame)

Once you have installed all Gstreamer libraries, open a terminal and type:
gst-register-0.8
That's it. You may find some libraries have changed and I think there is now
a selection for installing all the 0.8 packages in one shot.

Assuming of course that you have already installed libdvdread3
