Hi Peter, 

thanks for the tips

1) the mouse over no joy for I guess you are talking about the network
monitor icon, may have something to do with I am running restricted
drivers for the integrated wireless nic Intel wireless pro 3945
2) ran that command from terminal & displays the wl signal strength as
well as other info as you stated, so that is good 
3) for the file script, looks like you are suggesting to make an applet?
interesting but need more details on how to attempt this one
