Issue With mdadm and/or X

Try as I might, I'm just having issue after issue.  I toasted a Feisty
live CD the day it went public (that is, the 19th) only to find that it
wouldn't boot on by laptop.  I tried using the package manager for the
upgrade, with very similar results...mdadm gives an error message about
its conf file, and the standard X error screen comes up, telling me it
"Caught signal 11".  Please help out a relative Ubuntu newbie?

Equipment: Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop
2G Ram, 100 G Hard Drive
ATI Radeon Graphics card
Dual-core processor
