Sorry to jump in at the end like this, so If you have done these, then I
missed it:

So that you can know that we're talking about the same thing:

I am looking at Volume Applet 2.16.1

If I right click and select preferences, I get the choices of devices
ALSA and OSS. I'm using ALSA. You also see a list of the active
tracks. Close the box.

If I right click and select "Open Volume Control" I see the sliders for
the active tracks. Click Edit | Preferences and you get the same
preference box, with tracks, but active _and_ inactive. You should be
able to activate additional tracks.

That being said, The help files indicate that you will only see controls
for the items installed on your system. So I'm not sure whether adding
tracks will help. (I suppose it can't hurt to try, just remember what
you may need to undo).

Now, getting away from the preferences items. If you have not looked at
all of the sliders, make sure that they are all turned on AND that there
are no red "x" marks at the bottom. The X marks are mutes. (I know
this is dumb, but I went two days with symptoms that sound like yours
before I noticed that little red "x" on the PCM slider. I unchecked it
and the sound worked fine ever after)

Good luck with it.
