ACPI Fan Problem

I'm having a problem with a desktop machine (eMachines 370). Under Ubuntu it
never switches the CPU fan on - leading to an overheat and an unpleasant crashing
of the system :)
The machine is currently running feisty - although the problem was also there in
edgy. The fan works perfectly under Windows XP.
I've raised comments on various kernel bugs - E.g.
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.17/+bug/70739
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.15/+bug/24308
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.15/+bug/54554
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi/+bug/70753
But had little/no response - so wondering if there's anyone with any ideas on how
I might debug/fix/better report this?
