nvidia-settings GPU temperature question

Does anyone know, or have a view on, how reliable the information
reported by the nvidia driver via nvidia-settings is?

I'm particularly asking about the GPU temperature.

Mine (Gigabyte 7600GT silent pipe rev 3.0, in a well ventilated case) is
around 52C when idle or indeed most of the time (I don't play games
etc). I have seen people (presumably using Windows) reporting
temperatures as low as 38C.
