Kernel help

Hi, 
Can anyone help me. I am trying to compile the new kernel 2.6.20.2 to
include drivers for my wireless WAN which doesn't currently work with
Ubuntu 6.10.
I get the error:
Done
Begin: Waiting for root filesystem....
It just hangs here for a long time. After about 5 minutes it drops to a
shell. 
I don't know how to fix this. I have been searching for days and have
found plenty of people with this error but no suitable solutions. 
My grub menu.lst file is below:
