You're the guy who's been complaining that people blame the software when
they use it incorrectly. So don't blame Ubuntu for not supporting software
that is explicitly not supported.

Of course you can. Apt-get the source, apply the patch, build a deb package
of the result and give it a higher version number. When an Ubuntu deb
becomes available with a higher version number than yours it will be
applied.
Then if you're a good Ubuntu Community member, offer your patched version
back to ubuntu-updates (I have no idea what the process is for that).
