I had a similar problem on a notebook and a desktop. On the notebook,
it was more of a problem (because it really *wasn't* connecting to any
network). I remembered, dimly, someone mentioning that network-manager
only handles interfaces marked as "auto" in /etc/network/interfaces.
So on a hunch, I edited that file to mark them as auto and the problem
went away.
I'm not sure why I didn't run into this problem before. I suspect the
developers must have had to revert to network-manager's usual
behaviour to avoid clobbering non-managed (e.g., non-auto) interfaces
that may need a complicated configuration.
