SoundConverter zero byte .flac files

I just installed SoundConverter (Ubuntu v6.06). When I try to convert a 
.wav to .flac I get zero byte .flac files. It takes a long time (the wav 
files are 620K) but there is nothing in the resulting file.

Any suggestions? I looked at the bug reports for SoundConverter and didn't 
see anything that looks like this.

Also, how do I enable .mp3 conversions? That option is greyed out in 
SoundConverter.
