Jim,

I'm running (K)Ubuntu with a one of the new Airport Extreme's. I found that although WEP worked, the mix of operating systems I run worked much better with WPA.

This did mean that not all of the wireless cards would work, but got there in th end :-)

I believe the older Airport's should be compatible as they are use standard 802.1 b/g. My Airport Express running WEP works a treat too...
