Creating a maintenance script; I need everyone's help

I guess you would need the input from a competent and long experienced
Linux sys admin, but as a simple user of Ubuntu since
2.5 years when Warty came out... I have never had to do any maintenance
whatsoever on it... I just upgrade from one release to the next, every
6 months, doing a clean/fresh install, and that's about it...
